MAT RATS A SECTION 1 2008-2009

MAT RATS CLASS 1A PREVIEW
2008-2009

Favorites: Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights and Dover-Eyota Eagles

The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights will have back from their 20-3 and Fifth Place Class A title and will be led by four returning state qualifiers, four section place winners and two with a great deal of experience. Ten wrestlers with nineteen or more wins as they look to defend their Hiawatha Valley Conference and Section 1 Titles. The Knights could make a major challenge for a state Class A title. They did graduate some very good wrestlers including a state champion. Their key leaders will be Chad Lexvold, Drew Lexvold, Mitchel Lexvold and Caleb Langer.

The Dover-Eyota Eagles will return from 18-6 campaign and a Three Rivers Conference runner-up with one state qualifier, seven section place winners and two others with a great deal of experience. Despite the graduation of four very good seniors look for the Eagles to possible challenge for Conference and Section honors with the return of ten wrestlers with twelve wins or more. They will be led by Logan Otomo, Jon Anderson, Tim Pagel and Ethan Loftus.

Dark Horses: Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars and the Screaming Larks of LARP

The Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars will return two state qualifiers and five other section place winners from their 10-1 Hiawatha Conference showing. Despite the graduation of four very good seniors including two state place winners they should challenge for honors both Conference and Section honors. They will be led by Colby Mehrkens and Nate King.

Screaming Larks of Lewiston/Altura/Rushford/Peterson will return one state qualifier, two section place winners and seven others with a great deal of varsity experience from a 21-2 dual meet campaign. Despite the graduation of a state champion and their other very good wrestlers they should again challenge for a top four spot in the section. They will be led by Logan Brand, Tone Becker and Nathan Manfield. They will have ten wrestlers with fourteen or more wins returning to give them a very balanced lineup.

Look for Wabasha-Kellogg Falcons and the Pine Island Falcons to both push for a top four spot in the section. There are six medal winners from last season that includes: Chad Lexvold and Mitchel Lexvold of Kenyon-Wanamingo, Ben McPhail and Mike Lerum of Pine Island, Jon Farrell of Chatfield, Grant Hegge of Southland.

There are a total of sixteen returning state qualifiers from last years state tourney action. Those not mentioned above are: Justin Buss of Chatfield, Mark Evjen of Hayfield.

Look for the following wrestlers: Guy Wunderlich, Skyler Quamme, Josh Jacobson, and Oakley Mclain of Kenyon-Wanamingo, Matt Schroeder, Micheal Churchill and Nic Poshusta of Southland, Casey Boettcher of Triton, Michael Sulgrove, Ben Roos and Tyler Albers of Dover-Eyota, Mark Agrimson, Casey Hackbarth and Hilman Speltz of LARP, Tyler Maley of Pine Island, Luke O’Reilly and Ty Stecklein of Goodhue, Hunter Fitzgerald and Michael Bell of Chatfield, Josh Richards, Jack Hawkins and Hoss Roemer of Wabasha-Kellogg, Jake Braun and Cody Ball of St. Charles, Nick Masching and Dustin Mjerus of Hayfield to challenge for medals at the end of the season.
