MAT RATS A SECTION 8 2008-2009
Favorites: Frazee Hornets and the Greenbush-Middle River-Badger Gators
The Frazee Hornets will have back from their 15-6 dual meet campaign, section championship and third place in state class A four state qualifiers, four section place winners and seven others with a great deal of experience. Despite the graduation of five seniors four section place winners including two state tourney wrestlers look for the Hornets to challenge for Section and State Tourney honors. Their key leaders will be Mike Lucero, Cody Lafreiere/Sorenson, Cody Nunn and Jake Schermerhorn. They will have seven wrestlers back with twenty wins or more and eleven with eleven wins or more.
The Greenbush-Middle River-Badger Gators will have back from a 16-2 dual meet campaign and a section runner-up team four state qualifiers, three section place winners and four others with a great deal of experience. Despite the graduation of six very good seniors and one state qualifier to transfer, including five section place winners and three state qualifiers. Look for the Gators to achieve those same dual meet marks and challenge once again for section honors. Their key leaders will be Trevor Ingle, Skylar Price, Isaac Novacek and Storm Booe. They will have ten wrestlers back with thirteen wins or more.
Dark Horses: Mahmonen-Wauban Cougars and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels
The Mahmonen-Wauban Cougars will have back from a 11-7 dual meet campaign and a final four showing three state qualifiers, six section place winners and three others with a great deal of experience. Despite the graduation of six very good seniors including three section place winners and a state tourney wrestler the Cougars should challenge for a top four spot in the section. Their key leaders will be William Hunt, Caleb Lanoue and Garret Hoffner. They have nine wrestlers with thirteen wins or more.
The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels will have back from a 9-9 dual meet campaign four state qualifiers and seven section place winners. Despite the graduation of a state place winner look for the Rebels to challenge for Heart of Lakes Conference and Section honors. Their key leaders will be Tayler Yliniemi, Arthur Zevala, Zach Askelson and Logan Rinke. They have ten wrestlers back with eleven or more wins.
Look for the Crookston Pirates challenge for a top four spot in the dual meet campaign. There are four medal winners from last season that includes: Mike Lucero of Frazee, Tayler Yliniemi of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, William Hunt of Mahnomen-Wauban and Javier Portillo of Crookston.
